CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: Want healthy Iowans? Fund the outdoor recreation trust, advocates say
DES MOINES REGISTER: Iowans could reduce their risks for chronic health problems — from heart disease to diabetes — with financial support for a voter-approved outdoor recreation trust fund that promises improved trails, parks, lakes and streams, health advocacy groups said Thursday.
“Our organization has seen first-hand the health benefits of vibrant outdoor recreation and the importance of a safe, healthy environment for the body’s overall well-being,” said Richard Deming, a Des Moines doctor who founded Above+Beyond Cancer.
It’s one of six health organizations Thursday that supports raising the sales tax three-eighths of 1 cent to fund Iowa’s Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund. Sixty-three percent of Iowans voted in 2010 to create the trust fund, but lawmakers have failed to create funding for the initiative, despite several proposals.
